Wacky Winter Activity Benefits Special Olympics
NC
On March 6th, Mountain View Correctional Institution, as part of
their Law Enforcement Torch Run for Special Olympics NC efforts,
coordinated their 4th Annual “Freezin’ For A Reason” Polar Plunge.
Everyone – both individuals and those from groups and organizations
– were invited to participate in this wacky winter activity, which
raised funds for the nearly 40,000 Special Olympics athletes in
North Carolina.
As part of this experience, participants obtained monetary pledges
and then jump into the frigid 38 degree waters of the Toe River.
Through the support of 49 plungers and numerous monetary
contributors, the plunge raised over $9,500.
Through the efforts of law enforcement and correctional agencies
throughout North Carolina, the Law Enforcement Torch Run provides
approximately a forth of the Special Olympics funding each year.
This results in local Special Olympics programs throughout the State
not incurring costs associated with accreditation by the national
Special Olympics organization, general liability and participant
accident insurance coverage, property and D&O insurances, volunteer
screening, coaches’ education, competition beyond the local level,
not to mention the support and resources provided by being a part of
a statewide registered nonprofit. The list goes on, says Keith
Fishburne, Special Olympics North Carolina President/CEO. On behalf
of the Special Olympics organization and athletes, Mr. Fishburne
extends his gratitude to Mountain View Correction Institution
employees and volunteers for their continued efforts to raise
awareness and funds for Special Olympics North Carolina.
Polar Plunges and other events throughout the State allow Special
Olympics North Carolina to provide year-round sports training and
competition opportunities for children and adults with intellectual
disabilities in every county within North Carolina; giving them
opportunities to develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage, and
experience joy as they participate in the sharing of gifts and
friendship with their own families, their peers, and the community.
