Support Academic Excellence at Mitchell High School  

Athletes wearing letter jackets and sweaters are common sights at Western North Carolina high schools, but Mitchell High School is the first school in WNC to have scholars join their ranks.  In 2006, for the first time, Mitchell High School awarded the Academic Letter to students who have consistently shown the rigorous degree of commitment to academic excellence that a 4.000 grade point average represents.  Last year businesses and individuals from around Mitchell County stepped up to the plate and showed their support for academic excellence at Mitchell High School by sponsoring one or more Academic Letter Scholars.  Please join the ranks of these organizations, businesses and individuals who have shown their support of these talented young people as Academic Letter Scholar Sponsors.  The program began with grant funding.  Now it’s time for the community to show their support for academic excellence at Mitchell High School by allowing this innovative program to continue with community support.

You can sponsor one or more scholars for $50 for each student sponsored.  In addition to receiving the traditional letter and pins, students receive a special t-shirt and an invitation to the Ceremony of Excellence and the reception that follows for them and their parents.  Students’ names appear on a plaque displayed at Mitchell High School.  The names of Academic Letter Scholar Sponsors who donate now appear in the program for the Ceremony of Excellence, scheduled this year for May 7.

The program’s overall sponsors are the faculty and staff of Mitchell High School, Communities in Schools of Mitchell County and the Academic Booster Club of Mitchell High School, a United Way Agency.  The Academic Letter Program is building a culture of excellence at Mitchell High School.  The Academic Letter is a symbol of our community’s support of these students in their pursuit of academic excellence.  The founding sponsors hope the entire community will join this effort.
