O.D. Calhoun was honored October 29th for 60 years of dedication to
the Spruce Pine community. October 29th was named "O.D. Calhoun

WTOE's Steve Murphy, all dressed in
yellow for his duties as Master of ceremonies for the Big Annual
Spelling Bee sponsored by Mitchell/Yancey Partnership for
Children. The Bee was held Saturday, Nov, 13th and raised $3620. |

This new solid state digital transmitter
by Broadcast Electronics, has recently been installed at WTOE. This
allows WTOE to be ready for the future with digital technology and
also helps provide the clearest, best possible signal strength as
allowed by the FCC.

his is a picture of my
brother-in-law on a recent trip to Parrot Mountain (near Pigeon
Forge). I (holly@wtoe) thought this
was a great pic. Notice how all the birds are looking at the
camera--the look the red one is giving, the one grabbing his collar
and of course the one on top of his head! |

The 2004 Christmas Parade was held in
Spruce Pine Wednesday evening, December 1st. A large crowd braved
the cold temperatures to watch. The theme of this year's parade was
"Home of The Perfect Christmas Tree". Pictured here is the WTOE
float that features "Murphy In the Morning" in one of the planes
that flies into the "Murphy International Jetport".

Abigail Mae Payne is the daughter of
Brian and Dena Payne of Palmetto, Florida. Brian graduated from
Avery High in 1986. Abby was born September 4th. She has 4
brothers. Her grandmother is Cheryl Payne of Pine Run Ridge in
Spruce Pine. |

Jonathan and Josilyn Bradshaw are
ready for Christmas. They are 9 months old and their parents are
John and Crystal Bradshaw.

Gloria Houston (left), Nina McKinney and
WTOE's Steve Murphy were at the Christmas To Remember Concert on
Friday evening, December 3rd. The event was held at Pinebridge and
was a benefit for the restoration of the old Carolina Theatre.
Gloria was there signing her book, "Home of the Perfect Christmas
Tree".

Winter solstice, December 21, 2004. Bill
Carson reports the perfect alignment of the Little Switzerland
Tunnel with the rising sun for winter solstice. Over a dozen
"scientists" were out before dawn to verify and document that indeed
the sun does rise in line with the double yellow center line in the

Joyce Boone, GED/ABE recruiter at Mayland Community College, was
recently honored with the "Lighthouse Award" for being a beacon of
inspiration and hope to students and coworkers alike and for
lighting the path to a brighter tomorrow for so many through her
selfless service to the college and the community.
