The Mitchell
High School Quiz Bowl team, along with Mountain Heritage and
Avery High School teams, participated in the local Quiz Bowl
tournament sponsored by the Avery, Mitchell, and Yancey Library.
Quiz Bowl is an academic competition
with questions covering current events, history, science,
English and other topics test team members knowledge. The
winning team advances to the regional Quiz Bowl competition,
then that winner advances to the state finals in
Raleigh.
The Mitchell High team won the local tournament, but due to
scheduling conflicts will not be able to attend the next level
of the tournament. Mountain Heritage High School will compete in
the regional tournament. Pictured from left to right are

Another outstanding picture taken by
Martin Plamondon. The sunset glow on the trees made the moon
stand out. This was taken on February 9th.

Ann Whitson of Spruce Pine took this
picture of a bush during the recent snow.

Daffodils--there are lots of them
around this time of year, Vicky Hoilman took this picture of
these in Spruce Pine at the beginning of Lower Street.

WTOE's "Murphy In the Morning"
celebrates St. Patrick's Day. As best we can determine "Irish
Time" adds an extra 3 working hours to the day!

There was not as much snow on
Friday, March 24th as was forecast and most of it did not stick to
the roads. It was however enough to close the schools and it did
stick to trees and power lines as you can see in this photo taken by
Ann Ross

Retired Mayland
Community College Basic Skills faculty member Maisie Howell
received a North Carolina state signet
ring with the State of
North Carolina Seal located on the top
for 25 years of
service with a state agency. Howell was one of the first tutors
in Mayland’s Basic Skills Department. She helped with the GED
testing, tutored students in math, and helped others learn
computer skills. Howell worked at the college for 27 years.
