Two Mitchell High
Students Selected for
Governor's School
The Governor’s School of
North Carolina has selected two Mitchell High School students to attend the
2008 session. Mariah Parsley was selected to attend the Governor’s School
West at Salem College in Winston-Salem and Devan L. McVay was selected to
attend the Governor’s School East at Meredith College in Raleigh, N.C.
This summer program for
academically and intellectually gifted high school students will begin June
15, 2008 and run through July 26, 2008.. Mariah Parsley, daughter of Dale
and Mavis Parsley of Spruce Pine, and will attend in the area of Social
Science. Mariah is a rising senior at Mitchell High School.
Devan L. McVay, son of
Anthony and Chrissy McVay of Bakersville will attend Governor’s School in
the area of Social Sciences. He is also a rising senior at Mitchell High
School.
The academic environment of
the Governor’s School thrives upon the intellectual curiosity of students
and faculty alike. Students take no tests; teachers assign no grades.
Faculty expect students to aspire to be “producers of knowledge, problem
solvers, and problem finders”” (Gallagher, 1994). Classes blend
intellectual discussion with practical application of theory. Eight hundred
students from across the state are selected to be part of Governor’s School.
The Faculty and Staff of
Mitchell High School are extremely proud to have Mariah and Devan represent
our school. Congratulations!
